Best Buddy Dog Training builds real off-leash reliability the honest way. No shock collar. No cookie in your hand.
A dog that comes when called, stays close on a trail, and ignores the squirrel, the jogger, and the other dog is not a trick. It is the natural result of a dog who trusts you, respects you, and understands exactly what you expect. That is what off-leash training at Best Buddy Dog Training is built on: trust, structure, and clear communication, with no e-collar and no treats.
Most off-leash programs today rely on a remote e-collar. The dog learns to respond to a sensation on its neck, and the handler learns to hold a transmitter. It can look impressive quickly. But it is not the same thing as a dog who chooses to stay with you, and it is not what we do.
Our off-leash program is the finishing stage of the same balanced, relationship-based obedience we teach in every in-home session and every Board and Train. If your dog genuinely looks to you for guidance on a leash, the leash becomes a formality. Our job is to get you there, and to make sure you can keep it that way for the life of your dog.
We serve families throughout Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Eastern New York.
Why We Don't Use an E-Collar for Off-Leash Work
We are not anti-tool. We are anti-shortcut. An e-collar is a shortcut, and shortcuts have a cost that shows up later.
The dog learns the collar, not you. A dog trained on a remote collar often behaves beautifully while the collar is on and falls apart the moment it is off. The obedience lives in the equipment. Take away the equipment and you are back to hoping.
It skips the relationship. Off-leash obedience is earned, not installed. When a dog stays with you because it chooses to, you do not need a transmitter in your pocket at the dog park, the beach, or the campsite. When the dog only stays because of what might happen to its neck, you are managing a dog, not leading one.
It hides problems instead of solving them. A dog that bolts, ignores recall, or fixates on other dogs is telling you something about how it sees its place in your family. Stimulation can suppress the symptom. It does nothing for the cause. We would rather fix the cause.
The same goes for treats. A dog should not need a cookie in your hand to listen. Food gets you a dog that works for the reward and checks out when the reward is gone or the distraction is better. Squirrels beat kibble every time.
Our head trainer Shawn Hines puts it simply: who you are to your dog is everything. That's the whole method. Everything else is detail.
How We Build Off-Leash Reliability
There is no off-leash trick. There is a sequence, and every step has to hold before the next one starts. This is how we do it.
1. Leadership at home first
Off-leash freedom starts in the kitchen, not the field. Using our P.R.I.M.E. framework (Proximity, Resources, Interactions, Movement, and Elevation), we reshape the everyday moments where your dog decides who is in charge: who owns the doorway, who controls the food and toys, who decides when play starts and stops, who moves out of whose way. A dog that defers to you in these moments is a dog that will defer to you at 50 yards.
2. Focus without distraction
Before we ask for anything hard, the dog learns to check in with you on its own. We teach calm attention, respectful distance, and a dog that reads your body language and tone rather than waiting for a command or a click. This is the foundation of everything that follows.
3. Rock-solid obedience on a leash
Heel, sit, down, stay, place, and recall are proofed until they are boring. The leash is a communication line, not a restraint. We use clear, fair leash guidance to show the dog what is expected, and we do not negotiate once the dog understands. Our benchmarks are specific: a 30 to 60 minute down-stay, a reliable recall past distractions, and a dog that walks calmly at your side or behind you.
4. Distance and distraction, step by step
We add space before we remove the leash. A long line lets the dog feel freedom while you keep the ability to follow through. Then we raise the stakes on purpose: other dogs, people, wildlife, food on the ground, new locations. Every distraction the dog works through with you is a deposit in the trust account.
5. Dropping the leash
When the dog is reliable at distance and under distraction, the leash comes off. Nothing changes for the dog, because nothing about your relationship changed. That is the point. The dog never learned that the leash or a collar was the reason to listen. You were.
6. Maintaining it for life.
Off-leash reliability is a living thing. We show you how to keep the structure in place at home so the results hold six months and six years from now.
We Don't Just Train Your Dog. We Train You.
An e-collar puts the skill in a device. Our method puts the skill in you. By the end of the program you will know how to:
- Get and hold your dog's attention with your voice and body, not a remote
- Call your dog off a distraction and have it come the first time
- Walk trails, fields, and beaches with a dog that stays in range without being asked
- Correct clearly and fairly when needed, and stop correcting when it is not
- Keep the structure at home that makes all of the above stick
What to expect
Dogs and families are different, so timelines are honest rather than promised. Most dogs come to us through our In-Home Dog Training or Board and Train programs first, and off-leash work is the finishing stage once the foundation is solid. Some dogs are ready quickly. Dogs with a history of bolting, reactivity, or a weak recall take longer, and we will tell you that up front.
Results you can see
Our Success Stories and training videos show real dogs doing real off-leash work in real places: no collar, no treat pouch, no staged environment.
Is Off-Leash Training Right for Your Dog?
This program is a good fit if:
- You want a dog you can trust off leash on hikes, at the beach, or in your yard
- You have tried treats, a long line, or an e-collar and the results faded
- Your dog's recall works at home and disappears around distractions
- You want to understand your dog, not just manage it
It is not a good fit if you are looking for a one-week fix, or a device you can press. If your dog is currently aggressive or highly reactive, we will usually start with Board and Train and build toward off-leash work from there.
