Hingham hands a dog more good ground than most towns manage. The drumlin loops at World's End, the long flat stretch through Bare Cove Park, the fire roads in Wompatuck running back toward Cohasset, the harbor at low tide. Space like that lets an untrained dog look trained for years. He makes his own decisions and nothing goes wrong, until it does.
Then it is a Saturday on Main Street, or the crowd coming off the commuter boat at the Shipyard, and the dog you thought you had is not there.
We do dog training in Hingham, MA in your house and on your own street, never in a rented room with eight other dogs. Best Buddy Dog Training is Shawn Hines, one trainer with more than fifteen years behind him. There is no facility. No treats, no food lures, no clicker, no prong collar, no e-collar. The dog changes because his relationship with you changes first, which is why the work happens where the trouble does. The drive up from Warwick is routine and the South Shore is regular territory for us.
What Hingham Owners Call About
Off leash at World's End because everyone else is
The reservation is full of dogs running loose and owners calling names into the wind. Most of those dogs come back eventually, and eventually is the whole problem. A dog who returns after he has finished what he was doing has not been recalled; he has been waited for. Add a bicycle on the gravel path or a dog coming the other way over the rise and waiting stops being an option.
Harbor days, boats, and a dog who never shuts off
Boat season means a dog in and out of the car, on docks, around coolers and kids and other people's dogs at the landing. Owners read the panting and pacing as excitement. It is usually a dog with no idea how to be off duty, and one who cannot settle on a dock will not settle in the kitchen either.
Main Street and Derby Street on a tight leash
The sidewalks past the old houses on Main Street are narrow, and the plaza at Derby Street puts strollers, shopping bags and other dogs within a few feet of each other. A dog out front with his weight in the collar is not walking you because he is strong. He is choosing the route and the speed, and he has been allowed to choose for a long time.
A South Hingham acre and a buried wire
Big lots back onto conservation land, and there are deer and turkeys in the yard most mornings. The wire holds the dog on the property. It teaches him nothing, and it does not travel to the trailhead at Wompatuck. When something crosses the line, you learn what your recall was actually worth.

Board and Train
Four to six weeks living full-time with Shawn, training daily in real places - sidewalks, parking lots, stores, parks - never a kennel run. He collects the dog from your door and delivers him home, so he sees your household before the work starts. Three reintegration sessions at your house follow, because the dog has to learn the new arrangement where he lives. This is the route for aggression, resource guarding, serious leash reactivity, bite history or chronic fear. Pricing is discussed on the consultation. Details on the board and train page.
Puppies
Get in before the habits harden. A Hingham puppy should learn to walk past a jogger on a narrow sidewalk without making it an event, to hold still while the storm door opens, and to be genuinely bored in a busy kitchen. That last one matters more than any sit.
Common Questions
- We come to you. Every session happens at your home, on your road, and in the places you actually take the dog.
- A dog who performs inside a hall has learned that hall. Nothing about it transfers to the harbor on a July afternoon unless somebody builds it there.
- Sometimes. Often it is a dog who has never been told what to do instead. Give Shawn the whole story on the call and you will get a straight answer.
- Most owners see a different dog by the end of the first visit, because the first thing that changes is how the dog is handled. Making it permanent is what the other three are for.
- Off leash is earned in stages and it is earned on leash first. Read [how to train off leash](/blogposts/how-to-train-off-leash) before you test anything near Route 3A.
