In Home Dog Training in Stamford, Connecticut

Stamford asks a lot of a dog. A tower apartment in Harbor Point means an elevator ride before the first sniff of the morning, and that elevator is a small moving room full of strangers your dog did not agree to meet. A colonial in North Stamford means an acre of lawn, a buried wire, and a dog who has never once had to check in with a person. Different houses, same gap.

Best Buddy Dog Training is Shawn Hines. One trainer, over fifteen years in business, working in your home and on your block rather than in a room full of other people's dogs. There is no facility to drive to. No treats come out of a pouch, no clicker, no e-collar. The dog changes because his relationship with you changes, and that work happens where the problems actually occur.

We travel from Warwick, Rhode Island to lower Fairfield County, including Stamford, regularly.

What Usually Brings Stamford Owners to the Phone

Elevators, lobbies and the dog who barks at the doors
Harbor Point and the downtown buildings put your dog through a dozen forced introductions a day. Most owners manage it by timing trips, waiting for an empty car, or turning to face the corner. That is scheduling, not training. A dog who can only ride the elevator alone has learned one thing: that you will remove the problem for him..
Pulling on Bedford and Summer Street
The downtown sidewalks are narrow, the outdoor tables crowd the edge, and there is a delivery cart every thirty feet. A dog dragging you past the restaurants on Bedford Street is not excited. He is deciding where the two of you go and how fast, and he probably has been deciding it for a long time.
An acre in North Stamford and no recall
North Stamford lots are big enough that the dog never needs you, and an invisible fence on top of that gives you a dog with a wide territory and a hard edge. The wire holds him in the yard. It does not come along to the Bartlett Arboretum trails or Mianus River Park, and the first time a deer crosses the line you find out what the recall was worth.
Barrier frustration through condo windows
Springdale, Glenbrook and Waterside are full of two-families and condos where the dog spends the day at a window watching the street. Then he meets one of those dogs face to face at Cove Island Park and loses his mind. The lunging is not aggression so much as a habit built over months of barking at things that always went away.

In Connecticut that program is $2,250. More on how it runs on the in-home dog training page.

Board and Train

Four visits is not always enough. Board and train is four to six weeks living full-time with Shawn, training every day in real places - sidewalks, parks, stores, parking lots - never a kennel run. Shawn picks the dog up at your door and delivers him back, so he sees your household before the work begins. Three reintegration sessions at your home follow, because the dog has to learn the new arrangement in the place he actually lives. Send a dog this way for aggression, resource guarding, hard leash reactivity, bite history or chronic fear. The price is discussed on the call.

Puppies

Start before the habits set. A Stamford puppy needs to be calm in a hallway, settle while you work, and pass a scooter on Summer Street without treating it as an event. Housebreaking on the fifth floor is a scheduling problem as much as a training one - see how to housebreak a puppy.

Questions We Get from Stamford

Do you actually come to my apartment?
Yes. If your building has a lobby, a garage and an elevator, those are training environments, not obstacles.
We did a group class near downtown and nothing stuck.
Common. A dog who performs in a rented room has learned to perform in that room. Obedience has to be built where the distractions are real.
How long before we see a change?
The dog usually looks different by the end of the first visit, because the first thing that changes is you. Making it permanent takes all four.
My dog has snapped at someone. Will you still take him?
Call and tell us the whole story. Bite history is often a board and train conversation rather than an in-home one, and we will tell you straight which it is.
Can my dog ever be off leash around here?
Off-leash work is earned, not installed. A recall that works on your lawn and fails at Mill River Park was never a recall. Read [how to train off leash](/blogposts/how-to-train-off-leash) before you try it near traffic.
