The drawbridge crowd
When the bascule bridge goes up, traffic stops and a crowd collects on both sides to watch. Your dog is standing still inside a tight group of strangers, with nowhere to move and no job to do. Dogs who are fine while walking come unglued while waiting, because the walking was covering for the fact that they have never learned to hold still under pressure.
August on the downtown sidewalks
Ice cream cones at hand height, strollers, kids who reach first and ask later, half a dozen other dogs on retractable leads inside one block. A dog who lunges there is out of his depth: nobody told him what to do, so he improvised, and lunging worked. The tourists are not the problem. The missing agreement between you and your dog is.
Restaurant patios and the dog under the table
A good number of places here will seat you outdoors with a dog, which is a pleasure right up until he is standing, whining and winding the leash around the table leg. Down and stay on a crowded patio is not a party trick. It is the clearest test of whether your dog can switch off while the world keeps moving.
Quiet trails, then no recall
Denison Pequotsepos has trails minutes from downtown, and Bluff Point is just over in Groton. Both are where owners first try the leash off, and it goes fine for a season. Then a deer moves through, and you learn you had a dog who came back when nothing else was on offer. That is not a recall, that is a coincidence with good manners.
The summer rental household
Plenty of homes here turn over guests all summer, and the dog meets a new set of people every week: some ignore him, some feed him from the table, some let him on the bed. Then September comes and you cannot work out why he stopped listening. Rules that change weekly are not rules.

Board and Train
For dogs where four visits will not be enough, board and train runs four to six weeks with the dog living full time with Shawn. He trains daily in genuinely busy places - sidewalks, stores, parks, public spaces - never a kennel run, which is the only way the work means anything once the dog comes home to a crowded Main Street. Shawn handles pickup and delivery himself, and three reintegration sessions at your home finish it. - Can my dog realistically handle downtown in July?
- Most can, once they have something clearer to do than react. We train in the actual conditions rather than tell you to avoid them until Labor Day.
- We tried a group class and he was the worst dog in the room.
