In Home Dog Training in Barrington, Rhode Island

Barrington is a town of yards. Most are fenced, plenty of them invisibly, and a lot of dogs here have never been asked to do a single thing they did not volunteer for. Streets are quiet, sidewalks are wide, and there is frequently a four-year-old in the house who arrived around the same time as the dog.

That combination is why dog training in Barrington, RI so often gets called in around month ten. The dog was easy at first because nothing was ever required of him. Then he hit forty pounds, discovered the front window, and started making decisions.

Best Buddy Dog Training is one trainer. Shawn Hines drives over from Warwick and works in your house, on your street and on the path behind it. Relationship-based obedience with no treats, and no shock collars.

There is no training facility and no drop-off class. We come to you.

Where Barrington Dogs Come Unglued

The invisible fence and the dog who patrols the lawn
A boundary wire keeps the dog on the property and teaches him nothing about what happens on it. Most invisible-fence dogs get worse with passing dogs, not better, because every day they charge the line, the other dog keeps walking, and the dog concludes the charging worked. It works every single time. That is the trouble with it.
The bike path running past your back yard
Through Barrington the path is not a destination, it is the middle of a residential town. It runs behind fences, crosses the roads people use to get to school, and carries commuters, strollers, kids on scooters and neighbors with dogs on the same twelve feet of asphalt. Dogs living alongside it hear traffic on it all day without ever having to behave around it. Then they get walked on it and the backlog arrives at once.
Small children and the door
A dog who jumps on a six-year-old is rarely aggressive and almost never corrected honestly, because the greeting looks affectionate. It is still the dog deciding how and when contact happens. The fix is not holding his collar while guests come in. It is a rule at the door that applies before anyone reaches it.
Brickyard Pond and Haines Park on a Saturday
Both draw local dogs and both produce the same phone call. The leash goes slack, the dog goes to greet another dog, and the greeting goes wrong once. After that the owner tightens up on every approach, the dog reads the tension, and inside a month a friendly dog is a leash-reactive one. The dog did not change. The information coming down the leash did.

Puppy Training

The useful window runs from about eight weeks to six months, and most of what matters in it is not obedience. Housebreaking on a real schedule, crate work that does not become a fight, a name that gets a response the first time, and time near the front door without losing his mind. Barrington puppies get plenty of affection and very little structure, which buys a pleasant few months and then a hard year. Housebreaking a puppy covers the schedule.

Sessions work best with the whole household present. A dog behaves differently for every person in a house, and the one he listens to least is usually the one asking for the most.

Board and Train

When the problem is bigger than four visits, board and train is four to six weeks of full-time work. The dog lives with Shawn and trains daily in real environments: sidewalks, shops, parks, public spaces. Not a kennel run. Pickup and delivery are done by the trainer so he sees your home himself, and three reintegration sessions afterward hand the dog back with the obedience intact. Lifetime phone and video support comes with it. It suits aggression, resource guarding, severe leash reactivity, chronic anxiety and bite history. Pricing gets discussed on the call.

Neighborhoods Covered

All of Barrington: Nayatt, Rumstick, Hampden Meadows, Drownville, West Barrington, the County Road corridor, and the streets running down to the bay. Also Warren, Bristol, East Providence and Riverside. Just outside? Call anyway. The drive is seldom the obstacle.

Common Questions from Barrington

Our dog is on an invisible fence. Do you want it removed?
Not as a condition. But understand what it does and does not do, and stop expecting it to produce a calm dog at the property line.
We have young kids. Is any of this hard on them?
No. They are part of it. Kids follow rules well once the rules exist, and the dog treats them differently afterward.
He only pulls when he sees another dog on the path.
That is not a leash problem alone. He has learned that the leash is where he negotiates, and the other dog is just the trigger that starts the negotiation.
We were told a head halter would fix the pulling.
It redirects his head. It does not change his opinion about who is leading the walk. The philosophy and benchmarks page) sets out what we measure instead, and the testimonials page has what clients say about the results.
