Jake is a rambunctious young German Shepherd. When his owners called, he was showing territorial aggression at home and reactivity on the leash. This is his third in-home lesson. Shawn revisits the behaviors that keep the house peaceful when people visit, then takes Jake outside to start leash practice on the street.

The problem this solves

Territoriality is quite normal for a German Shepherd. Our task is to bring that territoriality under control. Leash reactivity is simply never tolerated. Both get worse with age and with every visitor who backs off, and both are the reason most owners stop having people over. Treating the symptoms separately doesn't work because they come from the same place: the dog is making decisions that should be the owner's.

How it was trained

By lesson three, Jake has already changed. He has learned to be calm when people come to the door and to look to his owner instead of acting on his own. He has also learned to go to 'place' on command. This session reinforces that inside, then applies the same rules on the leash outside. Nothing is bribed, and nothing is punished with an e-collar; Jake follows because his owner decides what happens next. The work happens in and around his own home, where the problem shows up.
