In his fourth in-home session, Jake the German Shepherd works through shopping carts, crowds, and noise at a local mall. Real distraction proofing.
What you're seeing
For Jake's fourth in-home session, Shawn and Jake's owner take him to a local mall. Shopping carts rattle past, strangers walk close, and a yellow Labrador goes by walking its owner. Jake, who was reactive on leash three weeks earlier, stays calm and relaxed through it all.
The problem this solves
Most leash reactivity is trained in quiet places and then fails in loud ones. A dog that is fine on an empty street and explodes at the first cart or dog hasn't been proofed; it's only been managed. The point of session four is to take the calm Jake learned at home and test it somewhere he cannot predict, with his owner holding the leash, not the trainer.
How it was trained
By this session, Jake's owner is doing most of the handling. That is deliberate. The dog has to follow the person he lives with, not the person who visits once a week. The rules are the same ones Jake learned in his living room: his owner controls the space, decides the pace, and handles the interactions. When the Labrador passes, Jake looks to his owner first rather than reacting, because that is who he now takes direction from.
Get this with your dog
This is the last stage of our in-home dog training program, and the reason we train where the problems happen instead of in a hall. If your dog lunges at other dogs, read How to Stop Dog Lunging or get a free phone consultation.
